All About Magnetic Materials

1. Magnetic Material Categories

Among many kinds of magnetic materials, permanent magnets and soft magnets are the two major categories. Permanent magnets are strong, and soft magnets are not. This article mainly focuses on permanent magnets.
  • NdFeB material: The most powerful magnetic material, cost-effective, widely used, working temperature from 80°C to 230°C.
  • Ferrite/ceramic material: low price, moderate magnetic strength, but excellent working temperature and corrosion resistance, and generally not plated.
  • Samarium-cobalt magnet: high price, high coercive force, and working temperature, but often replaced by NdFeB. Compared with NdFeB neodymium magnets, SmCo is more suitable for working in high-temperature environments.
  • AlNiCo magnet: AlNiCo permanent magnet material has the highest working temperature with excellent stability, but low coercive force and easily demagnetized if not handled with care.

2. Strongest magnetic materials

NdFeB neodymium magnet has the highest magnetic strength.

3. Magnetic materials in stators

The magnets in the stator are mainly NdFeB tile magnet and ferrite/ceramic tile magnet.

4. Magnetic materials in Motor

There are many kinds of magnets used in the motor. Depending on the specific applications, permanent magnets are mainly used including sintered NdFeB, bonded NdFeB, pressed NdFeB and ferrite/ceramic magnets.

5. Applications of magnetic products

Ferrite/ceramic and neodymium magnets are the most commonly used for all kinds of applications. For example, speakers use ferrite/ceramic and NdFeB magnets, and motors use tile ferrite/ceramic magnets Y30 or Y30BH, as well as NdFeB tiles with the working temperature of 120-180°C.

6. strong magnetic material is fragile

Magnets are powder metallurgy, and the stronger the magnet is, the more brittle and fragile. NdFeB neodymium magnet, the strongest magnet, whether sintered or bonded, can be easily broken when handled improperly.
